The Beast has continued it relentless crawl through our playground overnight
Mostly it has two flanks now, West and East
The west flank bordered by Little Tujunga Canyon
The East flank has two claws. The North One on Pacifico Mtn heading toward Pleasant View Ridge
The south claw roughly bordered on the south by the West fork and Mt Wilson Devils Cyn on the East and Upper Big Tujunga on the north

solar
At least the weather is slowing changing for the better.
Woke up to a marine layer.
Red Flag Warning cancelled, humidity near 20% at Mt Wilson this morning.
According to the NWS 20% chance of T-storms in the mountains today.
Matt- thanks for the maps! sweet

The LA Times has a pretty good Google Map they have been updating for almost a week. Includes all the fires, including Oak Glen:
A little bit ago, ktla showed some rather large flames and said they were to the east of Mt. Wilson.
Then they said something about a cafe that burned and all that was left was a phone booth... the shot they showed of the phone booth was not enough for me to figure out where it was...
Like with many of these new reports, it left me wondering, 'where/what exactly are they talking about'...
They only thing I could think of was Newcomb's - but that's just a big big guess on my part. Sure hope I'm wrong...

that must be hidden springs cafe. by the bridge/tunnel section of the forest hwy...............It was a little hole in the wall but its a shocker to know every thing from la canada to there is history

Hey Matt, do you have a new KML file put together yet?

Pleasant View Ridge? Crap. I know Gleason's toast, but how bad has Pacifico taken the hit?
Flames E of Wilson? Santa Anita Canyon?
I can't get the tower cam on Wilson to respond any more. Hopefully that just means that the power is out.
Frick. The N side of Wilson was so beautiful.

HJ, no flames on Wilson yet...

This was taken off one of the Sierra Clubs section:
"During the night the fire extended eastward and has encircled Mt.
Vetter and the Chrarlton-Chilao area.
The maps show it burning in Devil's Canyon, on Mt. Mooney, and threatening Newcomb's Ranch. It has also expanded into the upper West Fork, burning on the north side virtually all the way down to Cogswell Reservoir. One lobe appears to be making a run for Mt. Wilson from
the north via the next canyon to the west of Strayne's Canyon.
Another lobe is now burning the south side of Mt. Wilson near the summit.
Further south, most of Millard Canyon has been engulfed right up to and including Inspiration Point, however the fire has not worked downslope to Castle Canyon and Echo Mountain, nor is it on the slopes of Muir Peak yet.
Northward, most if not all of the Roundtop ridge is toast, including Granite Mtn and Roundtop, as is Pacifico. The Mt. Hillyer-Sulphur Springs area has not burned.
Major threats today include upper Devil's Canyon and thence into the Waterman-Twin Peaks area, Vetter Mtn and the Chilao country, Mt.
Wilson, Muir Peak, and the upper part of Eaton Canyon down to Camp Idlehour. A northern branch of the fire could crest over Bare Mountain and thence run further eastward onto Winston Ridge.
If the fire continues unabated for a few more days, it could well burn all the high country east to Cajon Pass. We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that the fire can be tamped down when it reaches the high country above the chaparral belt.
Pray for rain from Hurricane Jimena down in Baja California."

CORRECTION: The tower cam is up and running -- and all of the towers to the W are still standing. Let us hope that it remains so.
Quite a lot of flames here in Tujunga last night. The "call in the night" never came, thank God.
I've read that some homes were lost in La Crescenta. Anyone know where (or if this report is even accurate)?

Station Fire Active Perimeter
When a new active perimeter is release I'll try to update this map
Fire is REAL close to the telescopes and structures. It's all the way up to the parking area. Looks like it might be sticking low to the ground. No big flames are visible but a lot of smoke from under the trees.

Crap, looks like that nice Oak Grove in Haines Canyon about 2/3 of the way up the road before it turns out of the canyon is within the fire perimeter. Hope they didn't all get wiped out. Same with some of the nice oaks and sycamores up by the spring.

Yeah don't count up your losses until you can see'em
Those oaks at least are very resilient, the fires in SD a few years back went through places and it looked like they where done for, most survived.
The Sycamore's not so much
one "good" thing to come out of this is the destruction of the poison oak!

LOL. Amen.
Hey, when I zoom in, the perimeter disappears. What gives? Probably just a problem with my settings.
There's a KTLA feed that is showing the top of the mountain (Mt. Wilson) is starting to burn. It's burning near the 100" Hooker Telescope.
Note: the large amount of new smoke seen is due to backfires set by firefighters. This is the very best thing to do at the moment. Go California firefighters!
For recent fire updates, click here
I guess that is the best thing for now under the circumstances. Cross your fingers.

Bah! Buckthorn Now that's a real bummer
I'd rather walk though a mile of Yuccas than 1/10 mile of Buckthorn

Oh man, look at that lovely, healthy plant. Makes me itch just looking at it!
In the hillside overlooking the Off Road Vehicle Area on Highway 39, I set out a tarp and parked right on top of it for a couple of days, rolling in the stuff without any problem.
Then in a trip to Colorado I walked through the stuff and found my immunity had been recalled.
East Fork Trail on the Bridge to Nowhere, Bear Canyon, dark, dense colonies of the stuff, really neat.
You're a sick, sick man.

That stuff makes a nice green salad!

And don't forget to bury it at least 8 inches deep after using it for "sanitary activities".
