I hate sleeping bags. Ideas?

I'm thinking about replacing my sleeping bag. I think they're exceedingly silly.

I think the idea of having a down pants/jacket/booties would add a few ounces but be much more functional.

Has anyone tried this?
Has anyone tried this in a hammock situation?
Any brand/style suggestions?

Y'ever seen these?

I use the same poncho liner I was issued in the Army. That, in a UK Army issue Goretex bivy sack and I'm good to sleep to around 40 something degrees. Real light, and the poncho liner can be used as a sort of small tarp for shade (not waterproof or anything).

I also like to use a poncho (also USGI) as my tent, with a few bungee cords, make a hooch.

Or you can rock this bad boy:

Japanese Robert DeNiro gettin' down with the NihonSnuggay! You'll be defenseless against it's warmth and comfort... and anyone with arms.

Man, I want one of those!

But not until they redesign it with arms...

And what's up with the black - when they come in bright pink or lime green, I'm so there...

Sleeping bags are pretty warm for the weight.  You can get something like the Selk bag (see photos above), but it's like mittens vs. gloves:  mittens are warmer and so are sleeping bags.

If you get down clothing, the Western Mountaineering Flash pants and jacket are very light.  I have a set.  I use them around camp and then sleep in them which enables me to take a lighter bag.  My last couple of cold camps, temps in the mid to upper 20's, I was able to sleep comfortably in a 32F sleeping bag, and I'm a cold sleeper.  I figure I've got to have some insulation around camp anyway, so why not sleep in it and only supplement with a sleeping bag rather than carrying a heavier sleeping bag that will be warm enough stand alone.

I'm not sure about that yellow one - you know it's a color that us white people shouldn't really wear - uh, that and orange.

Regardless - this photo is just begging for a Taco head photochop!  It almost looks like he's dodging a rock to top it off...

You're in luck, white boy.  Here's a nice, boring green:

If you're feeling jazzy, you can go for electric blue -- or even mauve:

No more cop outs, pale face.  Wink

Well, you guys killed any chance I had of a reasonable discussion so I guess I'll just post this picture of me in my feathered friend. It's alright but it really needs some separated legs.

Taco

Your attempt to go on topic for your benefit has resulted in your image not working for one reason or another.

Seriously though, if you want I can clean the thread up. I'm sorry for taking it off topic.

It was actually all Jims fault it got off topic. Ya. You do need legs in it, at least if you wanna be able to walk very well.

Cute 510.

One of the dangers of hosting images from home. I'm sure the internet will start working again eventually.

Hahaha. Nah! This is way more entertaining. Plus I can post a picture of my car at some point! (We probably do need few vehicle threads at some point...)
Taco

Arright.

Also, http://www.kifaru.net/woobie.html
Hikin_Jim

My down 32F sleeping bag weighs less than 1.25 pounds.  A Kifaru woobie weighs 1.5 pounds, so you're not saving any weight, and you're certainly not saving any bulk.  On the other hand, the Kifaru woobie is about half what I paid for my down bag.  You might be able to get a USGI woobie for less, but then you're up to 1.75 pounds -- for a poncho liner.  They're OK, but they're not all that warm, certainly not as warm as a sleeping bag.

I guess if you really hate sleeping bags ...
