Indian Paintbrush, precisely what subspecies? I couldn't say for certain.

They were growing by a creek in the San Gorgonio Wilderness at about 7,500 feet.

The white flower isn't a Phlox...

It has a Compound Umbel structure

How tall was it?

What type of soil was it growing in

Full sun , shade etc....

looks like some sort of onion or?   I'll will endeavor to persevere

I'm guessing it's wet, moist soil, partial shade in a stream side environment similar to the Lemon Lily

Yep.

For a sense of the scale, note there is a bee in the photo.

Here's a large panorama of the stream bank to get another idea of how tall the plants are:
